Electronics & Light Bulb Collection Event!
Saturday Apr. 12th, 2014 - Wednesday Apr. 2nd, 2014
9:00am-1:00pm
"The Erie County Department of Environment & Planning (“DEP”) with funding support from the GM Tonawanda Engine Plant has announced a collection and recycling event for electronics and fluorescent light bulbs on Saturday April 12 from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the GM plant at 2995 River Road, Buffalo. In addition to bringing old electronic items for recycling, participants (after making a reservation) will be able to bring fluorescent tube light bulbs for disposal as well.
“Computers, cell phones, televisions, and other kinds of electronic devices have recyclable materials in them, and we all need to act together to protect our environment by taking care that these materials are put back into use and not dumped in a landfill or incinerated,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “This year, for the first time, we added standard fluorescent tube bulbs to the items collected due to an increase in inquiries from residents regarding how to properly recycle this item, as many people are aware of the presence of mercury in each bulb and want to keep that out of the trash.”
Please note, residents must make a reservation to bring fluorescent tube light bulbs to this collection day. Residents are asked to bring no more than 20 bulbs. Please call 858-4715 to make a reservation.
Compact fluorescent (spiral) bulbs will not be collected at this event as they are accepted at local hardware stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s at no cost. Reservations are not necessary for electronic items such as computers, printers, MP3 players, cables, wires, power cords, cell phones, copiers, etc.

DEP has been partnering with the GM Tonawanda Engine Plant on these no-cost, special collection events for the past seven years. GM takes their responsibility to protect the environment very seriously and requires every plant to hold at least one such outreach event per year. The GM employee group that handles logistics for the event is a cross-functional team consisting of Union, Environmental, Communications, and Security employees who work at the plant."
