New 2015 E-Waste Regulations

January 6th, 2015

Think again before tossing old electronics to the curb. Starting Jan. 1, it is illegal in New York state to throw away laptops, video game consoles and flat screen TVs with normal trash and recycling.

After the New Year, the final leg of New York's 2010 electronics recycling law takes effect, making it illegal for consumers to throw away so-called "e-waste" in the garbage. The law prevents heavy metals, acids and other hazardous materials from ending up in soil and drinking water.

Violators could be charged a $100 fine for each infraction.
